DKBA troops source: The Irrawaddy
Plans by the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) to transform itself into a Border Guard Force under the command of Burma’s ruling military junta have stalled because of opposition from a Buddhist Abbot who is seen as their spiritual leader reports The Irrawaddy.
They quote unnamed DKBA sources as saying Ashin Sujana objects to the plan and scolded high ranking DKBA officials after they agreed to the plan. He is said to think the plan is not good for the Karen people or the development of Karen State.
Ashin Sujana also known as U Thuzana is the abbot of Myingyigu Monastery in Karen State. He is seen as largely responsible for encouraging Karen Buddhist soldiers to split from the Karen National Liberation Army to form the DKBA.
The DKBA later signed a ceasefire agreement with the junta and the split led to the fall of the Karen National Union’s headquarters at Manerplaw in 1995.
Ashin Sujana is now reportedly in hospital in Bangkok receiving treatment for a long-standing lung problem. But, late last year, he called for Karen unity, which lead to talks between the two Karen factions (see: DKBA and KNU in secret talks).
Last year, the DKBA with support from the Burmese Army gained control of large areas along the Thai-Burma border.
