A freelance video reporter, who contributed material to the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), has been sentence to 20 years by a court in Burma.
Hla Hla Win, who worked as a teacher has been detained since September and was already given a seven-year sentence for possessing an illegally imported motorcycle in October.
However, after authorities learned she was associated with the exile DVB, she was charged under the Electronics Act. And on December 31 was sentenced again. She will serve a combined sentence of 26 years. Myint Naing, who was with Hla Hla Win, received a 26-year sentence.
The Electronics Act, prohibits sending information critical of the military regime out of the country via the Internet.
Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association have condemned the 20-year sentence. They said, “ASEAN and the rest of the international community should make press freedom one of the conditions for recognising the 2010 elections”.
The work of DVB’s video reporters was made famous in the film Burma VJ, which has been shortlisted for an Academy Award. According to Reporters Without Borders, at least 13 journalists and bloggers are currently detained in Burma, most of them in very harsh conditions.
