With tensions still high between the Burmese military and armed ethnic groups in Shan State, near the Sino-Burma border, the United Wa State Army (UWSA) has recently been boosted by the arrival of several thousand Chinese veterans of the Vietnam war.
According to the Kachin News Group (KNG), about 15,000 military personnel crossed the border recently from China into Wa or UWSA territory east of Shan State.
The reinforcements are mostly, Chinese Vietnam veterans who fought with the North Vietnamese against the US between 1965 and 1970. KNG also quotes border sources as saying other new arrivals include Wa students who have had military training in China and other foreign countries.
Tensions in the region have been rising since the Wa and other ethnic ceasefire groups rejected a plan by the ruling military junta for them to transform into Border Guard Forces under the control of the Burmese military.
The UWSA is Burma’s largest armed ethnic group. Sources in the area say war with the Burmese Army is looming.
