A protest by migrant workers at a factory in Mae Sot turned violent at the weekend; with the protestors setting fire to the factory owner’s car reports the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB).
The protest began after factory security guards assaulted two Burmese nationals, who had arrived to collect their sister.
One of the men was hospitalised, while the other disappeared.
The protest turned violent after security guards locked the protestors in the compound.
The police became involved and brought the missing man back from Myawaddy, in Burma, across the border from Mae Sot.
Many factories in Mae Sot employ Burmese workers, who have few legal rights in Thailand, and so are forced to accept poor working conditions and low pay.
Last month, over 500 migrant workers from 12 factories, took their employers to court for failing to pay their salaries. They were helped by the Migrant Assistance Program Foundation that has been trying to educate workers about their rights.
