The Karen National Union (KNU) has rejected claims by Burma’s ruling military junta, that it was responsible for a bomb that killed seven people on Wednesday.
Ten men and one woman were also injured by the blast in Papun near the Thai border according to the state controlled New Light of Myanmar.
The newspaper reported that the bomb was planted by the KNU, which it described as a terrorist insurgent group that is active in the area between Papun and the border.
They sad, “Insurgents plant and detonate bombs on roads and bridges and in busy places and festivities in towns and villages to create public panic.”
However, in the Democracy for Burma bog, KNU spokesperson David Thackabaw is quoted as saying “It is the work of the [government]; they have an extremely racist policy and they are going to destroy all the traditions and customs of the Karen people.”
“They will destroy the traditions and customs and culture of all the ethnic people in Burma.”
He added, “We never use bombs against civilian targets,” but acknowledged that they are used in active warfare against the Burmese army.
The KNU and its armed wing, the Karen national Liberation Army have been fighting for an autonomous homeland for over 60 years.
