The Burma Campaign UK (BCUK) has had to call off an investigation in to international law firms operating in Burma due to a shortage of staff.
The investigation was launched late last year; with plans to this year add the names of law firms to the so-called ‘dirty list’ for the first time. At the time, BCUK claimed to be actively investigating one major UK law firm, believed to be advising clients in Burma.
However, The Law Society Gazette reports, a BCUK spokeswoman said that staff shortages had led to the investigation being stopped. It is understood that the staff member in charge of the law firm investigation has left the organisation.
BCUK says law firms facilitating trade and investment in Burma are effectively funding Burma’s murderous regime.
In all, 14 of the world’s 100 biggest aw firms were said to be active in the region.
The annual dirty list is made up of non-Burmese companies known to be active in the country. Being included on the list has resulted in consumer pressure that has led to some companies pulling out of Burma.
The activists warn doing business in Burma, directly or indirectly helps fund the regime.
