Karen villagers in Thailand after fleeing fighting source: Bangkok Post
The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) is taking up positions in preparation for an attack on the Karen National Liberation Army’s (KNLA) 5th Brigade.
The offensive follows the successful joint DKBA-Burmese Army offensive against Brigade 7 in June (see: 7th Brigade Headquarters falls). Over 4,000 Karen villagers were forced to flee into Thailand to escape the fighting and forced recruitment by the DKBA.
According to a report in The Irrawaddy, some 2,000 Karen villagers have been forced to relocate by the DKBA to a jungle relocation site.
The offensive against Brigade 5 has been expected ever since the fall of Brigade 7, with the KNLA preparing for the attack (see: Offensive against KNLA Brigade 5 planned for next month).
If Brigade 5 falls, it will give the DKBA control of the Salween River, which is used by the KNU to transport supplies into Karen State.
