Authorities in Rangoon’s Dagon Seikkan Township have arrested several members of a volunteer group helping victims of Cyclone Nargis reports the Mizzima News Agency.
Members of the Lin Let Kye volunteer group were arrested on Tuesday evening and taken for questioning.
Friends of the volunteers were told they were being taken to the Home Ministry. However, the next morning, the local office of the Home Ministry denied knowledge of the detainees.
The group which has over 40 members donated school text books and other school expenses to children affected by the cyclone which hit Burma in May last year.
During a search of the home of one of the volunteers, Pai Soe Oo, officials seized a notebook containing the names of other Lin Let Kye members.
Cyclone Nargis was the worst natural disaster in Burma’s history. Following the authorities slow response to the disaster, many ordinary citizens banded together to deliver relief supplies to affected areas.
However, the authorities cracked down on such volunteers, stopping them from travelling to the disaster area.
Among those involved was popular comedian Zarganar, a well-known critic of the regime. He was later arrested and sentenced to a long jail term (see: Comedian sentenced to 45 years)
