Sino-Burma border source: KNG
Authorities on the Chinese side of the Sino-Burma border are warning their citizens not to cross the border or to make investments in Burma.
According to the Kachin News Group (KNG) A4 sized posters have been put up in border markets, road intersections and road corners in Chinese territory.
KNG quotes local sources as saying the posters warned Chinese citizens, that cross-border travel to Burma should be halted; cross-border timber business should be stopped; and not to make any business investments in Burma.
The border between China’s Yunnan province and Shan State in Burma has traditionally been quite open with residents crossing freely in both directions. It is also a major trading point.
China is a major investor in Burma, with investments in the mining and energy sectors.
However, tensions have been on the rise since August, when a Burmese Army offensive against the Kokang forced thousands of refugees across the border into China (see: Ethnic Kokang flee to China).
The signs are seen as a signal that China expects Burma’s internal problems will worsen.
Following the attack on Kokang, Beijing told its citizens in Burma to return home.
