US Senator Jim Webb to visit Burma

Jim Webb, the US Senator for Virginia will become the first member of the US Congress to visit Burma in over ten years when he arrives in the country on Sunday.
The Democrat chairs the East Asia and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The visit is part of a two-week, five-nation tour of Asia, which according to a statement released by Webb’s office will “explore opportunities to advance U.S. interests in Burma and the region.”
He will also visit Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
The visit comes as the Obama Administration is conducting a review of US policy towards Burma.
Webb served as an officer in the US marines in the Vietnam War, during which he was highly decorated. He later served as Secretary of the Navy during the Reagan Administration. He has written several novels set in Asia, including Fields of Fire, which was set during the Vietnam War. He speaks Vietnamese.
Webb was elected to the Senate in 2006 and has gone on to champion veteran’s rights, including introducing an updated GI Bill. He was elected to the Senate in January 2007.
