Aung San Suu Kyi’s guilty verdict prompted an emergency closed-door session of the United Nation’s Security Council on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting was called by France, which said it planned to push for a statement and a public session.
The session ended without a statement, with media reports suggesting China and Russia had tried to water down the final statement, which calls for the release of Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners.
Britain’s UN Ambassador John Sawers, the council chair this month said the discussion would resume on Wednesday.
Suu Kyi was found guilty of breeching the terms of her house arrest on Tuesday and sentenced to 18 months house arrest. She has already spent 14 of the last 20 years in detention. The verdict has already been slammed by several world leaders (see: Suu Kyi verdict draws widespread criticism)
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said he was deeply disappointed by the verdict. In a statement, he said he strongly deplores the decision and called for the immediate and unconditional release of Suu Kyi.
“Unless she and all other political prisoners in Myanmar are released and allowed to participate in free and fair elections, the credibility of the political process will remain in doubt,” he said.
