SPDC launches new cyber attack

The Mizzima News Agency is reporting its Burmese language web site was the target of a cyber attack over the weekend.
The attack coincides with the 21st anniversary of nationwide popular protests against military rule. The military junta violently crushed the protests, which ended with over 3,000 people believed to have been killed.
Mizzima quotes its webmaster, Ko Sai as saying the site had been the subject of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Services) attack. “The server failed when numerous requests were sent to it simultaneously,” he said.
Although it was not clear who was behind this attack, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), as Burma’s ruling military junta chooses to be known, has launched DDoS attacks against dissident websites in the past.
Previous attacks have coincided with events that the junta found sensitive, including during the Saffron Revolution in 2007 and after Cyclone Nargis in May 2008 (see: Burmese dissidents come under cyber attack).
