The Sino-Burmese border was reported to be quiet today after several days of clashes between the Burmese Army and armed ethnic groups.

According to The Irrawaddy, about 700 ethnic Kokang rebels surrounded their weapons to Chinese officials yesterday.

Tensions had begun to rise in the area after the government moved several hundred troops into the area to suppress what the ruling military junta sees as restless ethnic groups (see: Ethnic Kokang flee to China).

The soldiers from the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) crossed the border on Saturday said a Burmese military analyst.  According to the Associated Press, the men also surrendered their uniforms and were issued with blue overalls. They report dozens of men wearing blue overalls were seen in the town shopping for civilian clothes.

Meanwhile, the MNDAA’s allies in the United Wa State Army have moved back to Wa controlled territory.
The Kokang are a Han Chinese ethnic group that has received support from China in the past. And, Beijing has been accused of supporting both sides in the recent clashes.

However, with an estimated 30,000 Kokang refugees having crossed into China, Beijing took the unusual step of commenting on its neighbour’s internal affairs. The Foreign Ministry calling on Burma to safeguard stability in the area and protect the rights of Chinese citizens living there.
