The Salween River

The Karen national Union (KNU) is warning construction of the Hat Gyi Dam on the Salween River will cause huge environmental damage and human rights abuses.

The Irrawaddy is reporting that the KNU has written to the Thai government asking them to halt their involvement in the dam. They quote KNU vice chairman, David Takapaw as saying they asked Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to not continue the dam construction as it will force local villagers to flee to Thailand as refugees.

Burma’s Department of Electric Power, the Thai energy authority EGAT and China’s Sinohydro Corporation are jointly building the dam. It is expected to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity.

The Hat Gyi Dam is one of a series of dams to be built on the Salween River. Over 10 million people from 13 ethnic groups could be affected by the dams, which will also destroy local wildlife.
