Ethnic Kokang flee to China

Members of the Kokang ethnic group in Northern Shan State have fled across the Sino-Burma border to China’s Mansan Township to escape rising tensions reports the Shan Herald Agency for News (SHAN).
SHAN reports almost all residents of the city of Laogai fled on Monday after an announcement from Kokang leaders warned people to be prepared.
“People need not be panicked by the current situation but they have to be prepared all the time,” read the statement issued in Chinese.
Local residents report almost all people and cars are gone, shops are closed and local Internet access is down.
Tensions in the area have been rising after Burmese authorities entered the Kokang’s gun factory and seized all weapons. They have also been moving additional troops into the area.
With the increasing tensions along the border, SHAN is also reporting that China’s People’s Liberation Army has moved 700 troops to the border area.
In recent weeks the Burmese Army has also been accused of operating a scorched earth policy in southern Shan State while pursuing the rebel Shan State Army – South.
