The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has taken the rare step of speaking out on the internal affairs of one of its member states. Thailand, which currently holds the bloc’s chair said in a statement that it was deeply disappointed to learn that Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi had been sentenced to serve 18 months of house arrest.
They called for the immediate release of Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners to enable them to participate in elections planned for next year.
“Such actions will contribute to national reconciliation among the people of Myanmar, meaningful dialogue and facilitate the democratization of Myanmar. Only free, fair and inclusive General Elections will then pave the way for Myanmar’s full integration into the international community,” read the statement.
The ten-nation bloc that includes Burma has in the past adopted a policy of non-involvement in member’s internal affairs. However, the statement said, “ASEAN member countries wish to see Myanmar, a fellow ASEAN member, be at peace, prosperous and well respected in the international community.”
They also pledged to work with the Burmese government in implementing its roadmap to democracy. And, they urged Burma to cooperate fully with the United Nations.
Meanwhile, at the UN, discussion on a statement condemning the verdict was once again stalled (see: UN Security Council holds emergency session following Suu Kyi verdict), with China urging the international community to “fully respect Myanmar’s judicial sovereignty”.
