The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) is threatening to shell villagers in Thailand near the scene of an ongoing offensive, if they do not supply food.
The Free Burma Rangers report the threat was made to villagers in Noh Bo village, a few kilometres from the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Ler Per Her.
Ler Per Her has been under attack by a joint force of DKBA and Burma army troops for several days (see: Villagers flee offensive as Thailand prepares for influx of refugees).
The DKBA has been shelling the area around Ler Per Her since the weekend and has also been shelling the area opposite Noh Bo for several days.
Over 3,500 IDPs from Ler Per Her have fled the camp, most crossing into Thailand. Other villagers in the area have fled to avoid being forced to serve as porters for the DKBA. Some estimates place the number of refugees crossing into Thailand as high as over 6,000.
The Karen Human Rights Group has called this the largest refugee exodus from Karen State on a single occasion since 1997.
The DKBA has also been attacking the nearby headquarters of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA)’s 7th Brigade. 24 DKBA soldiers are believed to have died in the fighting, while there have been no reports of any KNLA casualties.
