The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), a Karen splinter group that has aligned itself with the junta is recruiting people from villages under its control to serve as border guards according to a report in The Irrawaddy.
They quote a source as saying recruits are to be trained by the Burmese Army. But, the Committee for Internally Displaces Karen People, a Karen relief group says villagers are being threatened with arrest if they refuse to join.
The DKBA has been ordered by the junta to provide border guards under the terms of the country’s new constitution (see: DKBA to provide border guards under new constitution).
The Irrawaddy quotes sources in Mae Sot as saying people in DKBA controlled areas are fleeing to Thailand to avoid forced recruitment.
The junta has ordered several so-called ceasefire groups to transform into border security forces. These forces are to be commanded by officers from the Burmese Army, effectively forcing the groups to disarm.
Two of the largest ceasefire groups, the Mon State Party and the United Wa State Army have refused to comply with the orders.
