Colonel San Pyone, commander of Battalion 7 of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA)’s Brigade 999 was killed in an ambush by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) reports the Democratic Voice of Burma.
The ambush was carried out by troops from the KNLA’s Brigade 7 headquarters, which fell to a joint force of DKBA and Burmese Army troops last week (see: 7th Brigade Headquarters falls).
The Karen National Union (KNU), the KNLA’s political wing says its troops are continuing to operate in small groups around bases in the area that were surrounded during the recent offensive.
Five other DKBA soldiers were killed in the ambush that killed the Colonel, and around ten more were injured. They were among a group travelling on boats on the Moei River from the Brigade 7 headquarters.
The DKBA claims the KNLA attacked from the Thai side of the river. A claim the KNU has denied.
More than 4,000 Karen villagers are believed to have fled across the border into Thailand to avoid the recent clashes (see: Displaced numbers reach 4,000)
