At least 4,000 Karen villagers are now believed to have been forced from their homes and seeking refuge in Thailand.
Several days ago, the Burmese army and its allies in the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army launched an offensive against a Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) base and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp at Ler Per Her (see: Attack on IDPs appears imminent).
In a statement issued on Monday, the KNLA’s political wing, the Karen national union called for tri-partite dialogue. “We, the KNU, earnestly urge the United Nations, the international communities, the regional and neighbouring countries to concertedly pressure the SPDC for immediate acceptance of tri-partite dialogue process, for resolving the political and military conflicts in the country.”
