7th Brigade headquarters during happier times, Revolution Day 2009
A joint force of Burmese Army and Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) troops is intensifying its efforts to capture the headquarters of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA)’s 7th Brigade.
For the past week, the area around the headquarters has been the scene of intense mortar fire by both sides reports The Irrawaddy.
The DKBA is a Karen splinter group that split from the Karen National Union –the KNLA’s political arm – and signed a peace treaty with Burma’s ruling military junta.
Yesterday, the KNLA allowed three bases belonging to Brigade 7 to be captured to avoid fighting their fellow Karen (see: KNU to abandon bases to save Karen lives).
The 7 Brigade headquarters are one of the KNLA’s few remaining major outposts along the Thai Karen border. It is expected the KNLA will not surrender it easily.
The Government forces began their current offensive against the KNLA at the beginning of June. So far, over 4,000 Karen villagers are estimated to have fled across the border into Thailand (see: Displaced numbers reach 4,000).
