Villagers flee to Thailand source: KHRG
For days there has been talk around Mae Sot of a major offensive against IDPs (Internally Displaced People) by forces controlled by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), as Burma’s ruling military junta chooses to be known.
According to the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG), over 700 villagers have fled to Thailand to avoid fighting between the Karen National Liberation Army and pro-SPDC forces.
The Burmese army troops along with their allies from the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) appear to be targeting the IDP camp at Ler Per Her on the Thai border. The camp houses over 1,200 people, most of whom have been forced to flee their homes due to fighting. The camp is near a KNLA camp, housing three battalions.
The SPDC forces have recently increased their presence in the area and are actively patrolling the area. They are now stationed only two hours away from the KNLA camp. KHRG also reports the DKBA has been forcing villagers to act as porters, to carry supplies into the area.
They note, “The recent advance appears to indicate a possible coming attack by the joint SPDC/DKBA forces on the KNLA camp”
Relief groups in Mae Sot are gearing up to aid villagers forced to flee the area. Partners Relief and Development issued an emergency appeal for funds to buy essential survival materials, including mosquito nets and blankets.
