7th Brigade headquarters
The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA)’s 7th Brigade headquarters have fallen to a joint force of Burmese Army and Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) troops reports the Irrawaddy.
The pro-government forces began a major offensive at the beginning of June targeting Brigade 7 that has caused thousands of Karen villagers to flee to Thailand.
Last week, the KNLA abandoned several bases in the area to avoid fighting their fellow Karen (see: KNU to abandon bases to save Karen lives). At the time, they said they would adopt guerrilla tactics.
The Irrawaddy quotes Maj Hla Ngwe, joint secretary (1) of the Karen National Union, the KNLA’s political wing as confirming the headquarters had fallen and saying, “KNLA forces would now resort to guerrilla tactics. Only one KNLA Brigade 7 base remained intact.”
The Brigade 7 headquarters, located about two hours north of Mae Sot was one of the KNLA’s last remaining major bases along the Thai-Burma border.
Since the latest offensive began, over 4,000 people are believed to have fled their homes (see: Displaced numbers reach 4,000). Yesterday reports emerged that Thailand was forcing some refugees back into Burma (see: Karen families being forced to return to Burma).
