A joint ambush by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the PaO National Liberation Army attacked a Burmese Army patrol on Sunday killing all 12 of the government soldiers.
According to an interview by the Shan Herald Agency for News with PNLA commander, Colonel Khun Thurein, the ambush was 57 miles south of Taunggyi city. It lasted about 20 minutes; with the rebels suffering no loses.
The PaO are an ethnic minority, based in Burma’s Shan State, which borders northern Thailand.
With less than 4,000 soldiers, the KNLA is mostly focused on protecting its own people, with bases and patrols within Karen State. However, through their political wing, the Karen National Union, they do maintain links with other opposition groups.
Khun Thurein said, “We have common aim to protect our people and bring down the dictatorship. If the SPDC is still committing human rights violations we may attack them not only in the countryside but also in the cities, too.”
He said the PNLA were also allied with other groups such as the as Shan State Army (SSA) South and Karen National Progressive Party (KNPP).
