Burmese migrant workers leaving their factory in Mae Sot
Thailand plans to register 400,000 foreign migrant workers reports the Irrawaddy. The Labour Ministry announced today it would register the workers, granting them permission to work legally in Thailand.
There are believed to be nearly four million migrant workers in the country, with about 500,000 legally registered. Many Burmese migrant workers are already in Mae Sot, working in the local garment industry.
The new workers will provide competition in low-paying jobs, often shunned by Thais.
Meanwhile, there have been calls for the United Nations to help migrant workers in Thailand, who are being denied their rights by employers.
According to The Democratic Voice of Burma, two rights organisations, The Human Rights and Development Foundation and the Thai Labour Solidarity Committee have written to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
They claim, the majority of Burmese migrants working in Thailand were denied compensation by their employers for injuries in the workplace.
They say migrant workers doing dangerous jobs are being denied the right to medical assistance. But, because of their illegal status, most migrant workers are afraid to complain to the authorities.
According to the Migrant justice Programme, one Burmese migrant lost four fingers when his hand got stuck in a machine. He was given 10,000 Baht (US$281) in compensation.
