Tropical Cyclone Bijli

Almost a year after Cyclone Nargis became the worst natural disaster in Burma’s history, a new tropical cyclone has formed in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to make landfall near the Burma/Bangladesh border over the weekend.
Tropical Cyclone Bijli is south-southeast of Kolkata, India and is moving east northeastward. The storm’s outer rain bands are already affecting eastern India, southern Bangladesh and parts of western Burma. It is expected to make landfall near the Burma/Bangladesh border Saturday or Saturday night.
Cyclone Nargis devastated Burma’s Irrawaddy Delta region when it made landfall on May 2 last year. It left 140,000 people missing or dead and left a further 800,000 homeless.
The ruling military junta’s delayed response to the disaster has also been blamed for causing more deaths (see: Junta accused of human rights violations for obstructing Nargis relief). The junta also initially refused international offers of aid and tried to block its own citizens from delivering relief supplies to survivors who were left without clean water, food or shelter.
