The Karen national Union is coming under pressure from several fronts. The KNLA (Karen national Liberation Army), the KNU’s military wing is fighting off an attack on the headquarters of its 201 Battalion.
According to The Irrawaddy, the base was attacked by a joint force of about 100, made up of both Burmese troops and soldiers belonging to the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA). The DKBA are a Karen splinter group that has sided with the military junta.
The attack came early on Monday morning and lasted about 20 minutes. No casualties were reported in the clash.
According to Karen military sources quoted by The Irrawaddy, the battalion was expecting the attack. It comes as the DKBA is trying to gain control of the area in order to profit from cross border trade.
Meanwhile, over the weekend, the state run New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported that Nae Soe Mya, sone of the late KNU leader Gen Saw Bo Mya had led 71 Karen rebels in surrendering to the government. Hey were joined by 88 family members.
