After two weeks of intensive fighting, the Burma Army and its allies in the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) have overrun the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA)’s Wah Lay Kee camp.
According to Mizzima between 400-500 pro-junta soldiers mounted a final assault on the camp yesterday. The KNLA’s small force of 50 to 60 men defending the camp was forced to abandon their position.
KNLA Colonel Nerdah Mya said they abandoned the camp at 5:15 and everyone was safe. “We will fight another day,” he said.
“We will set up more camps, we will fight another 20 years if we have to,” he said.
Wah Lay Kee, about an hour’s drive south of Mae Sot is home to the 201 battalion of the KNLA’s sixth brigade. It has been under siege by the Burma Army and DKBA since April 12.
Meanwhile, the Nation newspaper reports, the Thai Army has protested to the Burmese side after Burmese mortars fired into Thailand during the assault on the base injured two Thai soldiers (see: Thai soldiers injured in clash with DKBA).
