Fighting between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the Burmese Army along with its allies from the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) south of Mae Sot entered its tenth day today. The government forces are trying to gain control of the KNLA’s Wah Lay Kee camp, home to the 201st battalion of the KNLA’s sixth brigade region.
Mizzima News quotes Colonel Nerdah Mya as saying the pro-government forces are relying on shelling the area with heavy weaponry after suffering heavy casualties this week from land mines and jungle booby traps set by the KNLA, who are relying on small bands of guerrilla fighters to hold off an assault on the base.
One KNLA soldier was injured this afternoon by a land mine. The incident brings to four the number of KNLA soldiers injured in the fighting around the base. There was also one fatality.
Meanwhile seven soldiers from the pro-government forces have been killed and 33 wounded.
The camp is a couple of hours south of Mae Sot near the Thai border.
The Thai Army has increased its presence along the border, preventing either soldiers or civilians from crossing into Thailand.
