A Baptist church was inaugurated in northeast Shan State’s Kutkai town this weekend reports the Kachin News Group KNG) after its construction had been blocked for over ten years.
Burma’s ruling military junta has banned the construction of new churches in the country.
However, KNG reports the junta has been trying to win support for elections it plans to hold next year from Christians by donating rice, cooking oil, and telephones to churches in Kachin State over the last two years.
The Rev. Lahpai Zau Yaw Memorial Church was built with funds donated by local Christians as well as Kachin Christian communities abroad.
The junta is trying to encourage participation in the elections in order to legitimise the polls that are to be held under the new Constitution.
The Constitution was drafted by the junta without input from the opposition and has been dismissed by critics as a sham. They say it is intended to enshrine military rule in Burma. Some Christians have criticised church leaders for accepting gifts from the junta, saying they were offered by Satan.
