The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has stressed he is continuing to follow the situation in Burma closely.
The statement follows a letter sent by the US Senate Women’s Caucus on Burma that called on Ban to push for the release of all political prisoners, including detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It read, “We express our solidarity with our friend and sister, Aung San Suu Kyi, and express our deep commitment to the struggle for freedom and justice in Burma.”
In a statement issued through a spokesman, Ban said he continues to follow closely the situation in Myanmar, including through his Special Adviser, to promote national reconciliation, democratic transition, and respect for human rights in accordance with the mandate given to him by the General Assembly.
