UN: Continued support needed for victims of Cyclone Nargis

The UN says victims of Cyclone Nargis, which struck in May last year still need continued support, and is appealing to the international community for help in rebuilding the lives of the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the storm.
Nargis was the worst natural disaster in Burma’s history, leaving 140,000 missing or dead and a further 800,000 homeless.
The UN together with the Burmese government and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) released a three-year Post-Nargis Response and Preparedness Plan earlier this year to cover reconstruction of communities affected by the storm. It has a price tag of nearly US$700 million.
However, funds are still needed to cover cost, particularly in the shelter and agriculture sectors.
With the monsoon season fast approaching, over 1,000 families are still taking shelter in vulnerable buildings that the UN says provide minimal protection from possibly severe weather conditions.
Bishow Parajuli, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar said, “Experience from natural disasters of similar scale of destruction has shown that recovery support will be required for years to come.”
The UN is planning to hold another donor meeting to discuss needs in Yangon this week.
