Migrant workers leaving their factory in Mae Sot
Authorities in Mae Sot are reportedly cracking down on illegal migrant workers from Burma. The Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) reports that about 600 people have been arrested in a series of surprise raids over the last two days.
The raids on migrant areas of town are being conducted in the early morning, with eyewitnesses saying the police have been quite aggressive, breaking down doors and beating those who try to flee.
Those caught in the crackdown are being held at locations around Mae Sot, before being sent back across the border.
Mae Sot has a large population of illegal migrant workers, who cross the border from Burma looking for work. They are forced here because of Burma’s appalling economic conditions. They find work either as farm labourers or in the many factories around Mae Sot that rely on cheap labour from Burma.
However, according to the DVB, some businesses have been forced to halt as the crackdown has prevented their Burmese workforce from coming to work.
