A report released this week by Reporters Without Borders has labelled Burma as an “Enemy of the Internet”, along with China, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Reporters Without Borders noted that all 12 countries had transformed their Internet into an Intranet in order to prevent their population from accessing undesirable online information. They said, ““All these countries distinguish themselves not only by their ability to censor online news and information but also by their virtually systematic persecution of troublesome Internet users.”
The report highlights the case of Nay Phone Latt, the blogger sentenced under the Electronics Act to 20 and a half years in prison after being caught in possession of a film deemed subversive. The sentence was later reduced on appeal to 12 years! (See: Nay Phone Latt’s sentence reduced).
They also noted that the country’s Censorship Bureau has ordered newspapers to ensure their online editions and their printed editions are exactly the same.
A further ten countries are listed as ‘under surveillance’ for adopting worrying measures that could open the way to abuses. Among the ten are Australia and South Korea.
