Karen soldiers during recent Revolution Day celebrations

Burma’s ruling military junta says insurgents from the Karen National Union (KNU) fired heavy weapons at the town of Myawaddy on the Thai border early Saturday.
According to the state controlled New Light of Myanmar newspaper, two shells landed about seven miles southwest of the town. One landed near a hotel and another fell into a monastery. There were no causalities.
The KNU has been fighting for an autonomous homeland in eastern Burma for 60 years. The newspaper called them terrorist insurgents and accused them of committing destructive acts, bullying innocent people with the use of arms, murdering, planting mines, looting, robbing people of their possessions, demanding extortion money, burning down houses and firing heavy weapons from the distance into towns and villages.
The report came as the UN’s Special Human Rights Rapporteur for Myanmar, Tomas Ojea Quintana, who is on a five-day visit to the country, left to visit Karen State. He is expected to meet with the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, a Karen splinter group that broke away from the KNU and is now fighting alongside the Burmese Army.

    The KNU categorically denies this.

    Thanks Dan,
I’m sure most people can see through these lies.
