Reporters Without Borders has launched a petition for the release of Burmese blogger Nay Phone Latt and comedian Zrganar. Nay Phone Latt was sentenced to 20 and a half years in prison in November (see: Bloggers unite for Nay Phone Latt). The petition was launched on Thursday, the first anniversary of Latt’s arrest.
Reporters Without Borders notes, “Nay Phone Latt’s only crime was to be caught in possession of a film regarded as subversive by the military government. Zarganar was convicted solely for expressing his views.”
They add, “Their trials were farces organised by special courts that take their orders directly from the government”
The press freedom group is also calling on the UN’s special envoy, Ibrahim Gambari to pay attention to their cases. Gambari is expected to visit Burma in the next few days (see: Gambari to head back to Burma)
