The Burmese Army has offered the parents of a seven-year-old Karen girl, who was raped and murdered by a Burmese soldier, a bribe of US$800 for their silence.
Ma Ne Mya was raped and killed in her home in Ma Oo Bin village in Nyaunglebin Township on December 27 (see: Call for justice after SPDC soldier rapes and kills 7-year-old girl). But, according to a relief team operating in the area, after the girl’s parents and local village leaders petitioned the Burma Army for justice, the commander of the soldier’s battalion demanded a total of one million kyat (US$800) from ten local business owners with which to pay off the girl’s parents.
They also report the parents have been threatened to either accept the money as sufficient payment or face punishment.
