Nargis recovery to take until 2011

Cleaning up after Cyclone Nargis
It will likely take up to four years for survivors of Cyclone Nargis to fully recover from the storm’s impact. Bishow Parajuli, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator said, “Full recovery will take three to four years, depending on the availability of funds.”
Nargis struck Burma in May 2008 and according to IRIN (Integrated Regional Information Networks), the news and analysis service of the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Parajuli’s assessment from the time of the storm to 2011 is based on the upcoming ‘Post-Nargis Recovery and Preparedness Pan. The plan is a strategic framework for the international community’s recovery assistance.
Nargis hit Burma’s Irrawaddy Delta on May 2 and 3, and left close to 140,000 people dead or missing. According to IRIN, eight months after the storm, life continues to be a struggle for 2.4 million people affected by the storm. Many lost their homes and livelihoods.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has already provided food to over one million people since May and expects to continue covering the needs of 450,000 people through April.
The agency is planning on assessing the situation next month to decide if that support will have to be continued.
Chris Kaye, WFP country director said, “Moving people from a reliance on food aid to more sustainable food security – this is where the integration of our activities with those working in early recovery and agriculture is paramount.”
However, funding remains a problem for the UN’s Nargis recovery work. The UN’s US$477 million flash appeal, relaunched in July to cover emergency relief and early recovery efforts is only 64 percent funded.
