A UN backed review of humanitarian assistance to victims of Cyclone Nargis has found that ongoing relief efforts need to be stepped up.
The comprehensive field assessment led by the Tripartite Core Group, made up of the UN, the Burmese government and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) found there are still chronic needs in food security and nutrition. And, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Bishow Parajuli says greater support is still needed in the western delta and some of the larger towns.
Cyclone Nargis struck in early May, killing around 140,000 people and leaving 800,000 homeless. It has been described as the worst natural disaster in Burma’s history.
The UN has issued an appeal for US%477 million to assist those affected by the storm. However, so far only 64 percent or US^403 million has been raised.
