Thousands of people in Burma are facing a critical situation due to a severe lack of antiretroviral treatment (ART), used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS warns Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
MSF provides ART to more than 11,000 people, but in a report issued today, they reveal they have had to restrict the number of new patients they can treat. “With few options to refer new patients for treatment elsewhere, the situation is dire,” warns the report entitled ‘A preventable fate: The failure of ART scale-up in Myanmar’.
They estimate240,000 people in Burma are currently infected with HIV. Of them, 76,000 are in urgent need of ART. However, less than 20 percent of them receive the treatment through MSF, along with other international nongovernmental organisations and the Burmese government.
MSF says the Burmese government and the International Community need to mobilize quickly in order to address this situation.
Burma spends 0.3 percent of its GDP on health, with only a small portion going to HIV/AIDS. The full report can be downloaded here.
