Blogger Nay Phone Latt has been transferred to a Pa-an prison in Karen State, about 135 miles from Yangon, making it harder for his relatives to visit him.
The transfer is one of several involving activists sentenced to lengthy prison terms in recent days. Many have been transferred to remote prisons in all parts of Burma.
The Hong Kong based Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has condemned the transfers, calling them death sentences. Basil Fernando, AHRC’s executive director said, “There is no legal or administrative explanation for these prison transfers.”
Clearly, the purpose is purely vindictive and speaks to the utterly callous and unscrupulous nature of the authorities in Burma,” he said.
“In fact, these are de facto death sentences for some detainees, because they will not survive the long sentences and harsh conditions in remote prisons where their families and friends will be grossly inconvenienced if trying to visit,”
According to a joint statement condemning the transfer by Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association, Pa-an prison is known for its appalling sanitary conditions.  They said, “The transfers have yet again highlighted the military government’s inhuman nature.”
