In the latest round of hefty prison sentences handed out to critics of Burma’s military regime, popular comedian Zarganar was given a 45-year term on Friday.
According to The Irrawaddy, 35 people were sentenced on Friday, including Ashin Gambira, a prominent monk, who helped lead the popular anti-government protests last year. He was sentenced to a total of 68 years.
Earlier this year, Zarganar was arrested while delivering relief supplies to victims of Cyclone Nargis, which devastated the Irrawaddy Delta in May. His latest conviction was for several criminal charges including infringements of the Electronic Act.
Also sentenced on Friday were 13 members of the 88 Generation Students group, who received prison sentences ranging from three to five years.
The last few weeks have seen a wave of hefty prison sentences handed out as the junta tries to silence the opposition ahead of elections planned for 2010 (see: Clearing the Decks). Among those convicted are monks, students, artists, defense lawyers and members of the opposition National League for Democracy.
