The White House has announced President George W. Bush will nominate Michael Green as Special Representative and Policy Coordinator for Burma, a position which carries the rank of Ambassador.
The position was created under the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE (the Junta’s Anti-Democratic Efforts) Act, which was signed into law by President Bush on July 29. It calls for the special representative to develop a comprehensive approach to dealing with Burma, including pressure, dialogue and support for NGOs providing humanitarian relief to the Burmese people.
He is also to work with Burma’s neighbors and other interested countries, such as the European Union (EU) and ASEAN in order to coordinate international action against the junta.
Green is currently an Associate Professor at Georgetown University and serves as a Senior Advisor and Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He previously served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council. Green has also served as a Director of Asian Affairs at the National Security Council.
Green’s appointment still needs to be confirmed by the US Senate.
