A UN resolution highly critical of the Burmese government is to go before the General Assembly, with a vote expected in December.
According to The Irrawaddy, 43 nations voted to put the resolution before the General Assembly, including Australia, Germany, the UK and the US.
The resolution urges full respect for human rights and the restoration of democracy, through a free and fair election.
It also calls for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners, the implementation of recommendations by the N’s special rapporteur on Burma and for the junta to life all restrictions on peaceful political activities.
In the past, China has blocked the UN from discussing Burma, by using its veto power to shield its ally.

The Chinese cite their policy of non-interference in other countries domestic affairs for their blocking of UN action against Burma. But, they are also known to have an eye on Burma’s reserves of natural gas.
