Burmese blogger Nay Phone Latt was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday. His crime, practising the freedom of speech for which the Internet is famous.
He was arrested in January after publishing a cartoon of junta leader Than Shwe, and charged with offences under both the Electronics Act and Video Act, apparently for possession of a banned video.
His sentence was one of several handed down to pro-democracy activists on Monday (see: Severe sentences handed down to activists).
While there has been widespread international condemnation of the sentences, the blogshere is also uniting behind Nay Phone Latt. To this end, Words of Life is calling upon bloggers everywhere to display Nay Phone Latt’s picture.
I have also started a Facebook group for bloggers and anyone wanting to show their support. It can be found here.
