The specter of human trafficking of Burmese women into China has again raised its ugly head, with the Irrawaddy reporting 200 Burmese women were arrested in China.
According to a source on the border, the women had been smuggled into the country under the pretext of finding work.
Twenty-four of the women were deported on Sunday, while the rest face a three month sentence for violating Chinese immigration laws.
The women say they entered the country with the help of human traffickers. One told of being ‘married’ to a 60-year-old Chinese man.
The woman said she was told she could earn 150,000 kyat monthly (US $121) in China.
According to a recent report by the Kachin Women’s Association of Thailand, the trafficking of women from Burma into China to become wives for poor Chinese men remains a problem, despite attempts by the Burmese authorities to crack down on the problem (see: Trafficking continues despite the junta’s anti-trafficking law)
