Recently released political prisoner U Win Tin has revealed he resisted the authorities’ attempts to release him. He told the Democratic Voice of Burma that he was evicted not released.
Prior to his release, Win Tin was Burma’s longest serving political prisoner. He was detained for 19 years. He was released as part of a government amnesty that saw 9002 people released yesterday (see: Burma’s longest serving political prisoner released).
He said, “I told them, ‘I will only leave the prison when you drag me out’. This is because I don’t accept the way they have released me. This is not a good sign. Nothing good can come of it.”
Burma watchers are warning it is too early to say if there will be any more positive developments from the junta. The Irrawaddy quoted Nyan Win, spokesman for the opposition National League for Democracy as saying, “It is too early to comment on this issue and it remains to be seen whether it is a positive move or not.”
Only a handful of political prisoners were included in the 9002 released yesterday.
According to Amnesty International there 2,000 political prisoners detained in Burma, among them is NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained for 13 of the past 19 years.
