The coming of the dry season is raising concerns about a shortage of clean water in the Irrawaddy Delta, which bore the brunt of Cyclone Nargis in May.

According to the Irrawaddy magazine’s web site, relief workers are concerned that the storm surge created by Nargis has filled many ponds and wells with salt water, that has not yet been cleaned up.

The Cyclone Relief Committee of the opposition National League for Democracy warns, as dry season approaches in the next few weeks in Burma, sufficient clean drinking water will become a major challenge.

During the rainy season, refugees forced from their homes have been able to survive on rainwater, but the coming of the dry season means there is less rain.
