Suu Kyi named 38th most powerful woman in the world

Burma’s opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been ranked 38th on Forbes Magazine’s annual list of the 100 most powerful woman in the world.

The rankings are based on press mentions, job title, past accomplishments and the amount of money the woman controls.

Listed as ‘deposed Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Laureate, Suu Kyi is two places above Melinda Gates, the wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates and co-chairman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

At 36, two places above Suu Kyi is Oprah Winfrey. The list is topped by German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. Also listed are Condoleezza Rice (7), Sonia Gandhi (21), Hillary Rodham Clinton (28) and Laura Bush (44).

Forbes credits Cyclone Nargis with raising the profile of Burma.
