Authorities in Pakokku have reportedly brought traffic to a standstill after putting up barbed wire barriers to prevent demonstrations as the first anniversary of the Saffron Revolution approaches.

According to the Democratic Voice of Burma, authorities have increased security in Pakokku amid concerns that monks will stage protests to mark September’s Saffron Revolution.

Last year’s mass demonstrations were sparked by Burmese troops using force to break up a peaceful demonstration in this central Burmese town.

Monks from lecturing monasteries have already begun a so-called religious strike, by refusing to accept donations from the Ministry of Communications, Post and Telegrams.

Last week, they threw away materials donated to some monasteries by the ministry.
